A woman is going viral on Instagram with her simple money-saving hack for how to keep greens fresh for longer.
Sometimes, it feels like kale, arugula, spinach, and other greens expire before you get home from the grocery store. Unless you're making a "Seinfeld"-level big salad, there's almost no way to use them in time.
That is, we didn't think there was a good way to use them, until we saw a viral video from an Instagrammer named Kate (@my_plastic_free_home). Kate has over 140,000 followers on her page, where she shares DIY hacks, eco-friendly tips, and more.
Kate's Instagram Reel showing how to utilize fast-aging greens drew over 18,000 views. Her solution? Turn those leaves into "green cubes of goodness."
In her video, Kate proceeds to show how she makes her "green cubes." She starts by blending four cups of leftover greens with one cup of water.
Once the mixture is smooth, she adds those greens to an ice cube tray and freezes them. From there, she unfreezes and uses them as needed down the line — especially for making green juices and breakfast smoothies.
"Ready for whenever you need them!" Kate wrote in her caption.
The green cubes aren't just an easy way to save money and reduce food waste — they can also help you inject your daily routine with some high-nutrient foods. Leafy greens are extremely low-calorie, yet they often contain large amounts of antioxidants, vitamin A, vitamin K, fiber, magnesium, calcium, and more.
Commenters were huge fans of the hack, with many saying they'd also try the cubes for making pesto, salad dressing, and more.
"Trying this today," one user said.
"Such a great idea," another agreed.
